Signorello Vineyards
TRAVEL - May 14, 2009
It's 2:00 AM. Beams of light from miners' hats crisscross the cold, black night. Get them now, while they're firm! It's a race against the sun. By mid-morning they'll be too soft.
The intensity of the harvest typifies the dedication of the family who founded Signorello Vineyards. In 1977, Ray Signorello, Sr., acted out his dreams of a wine country lifestyle. He bought vineyard land in Napa Valley and, together, with his son, Ray Jr., grew the winery using old world traditions of France and Italy.
Turn off the Silverado Trail up the gently rising, tree-lined drive to the winery. Its modestly appointed tasting room only hints at the fun that awaits the Enoteca Signorello tasting ($65 per head) under the tutelage of long time Napa Valley resident and Tasting Room Manager, Kathy Wood. We experienced her passion for the valley lifestyle, while sipping wines around the infinity pool, sampling American Kobe Wagyu beef from Snake River Farms and marveling at scenic vistas. The pairings were divine but the highlight was a widely acclaimed Bordeaux-style blend, the 2005 Padrone, with food or alone.
Lively conversation reverberated around the Italian courtyard stimulated by our "Hostess with the Mostess." Long beyond the scheduled 90 minutes, we regaled over Rhone varietals, Tuesday afternoon bocce competitions, Napa zoning oddities, and the best spots to hang out with winemakers. La dolce vita!
