Old-World Elegance
Jordan Winery
TRAVEL - May 6, 2009
Traversing oak woodlands up a panoramic, winding drive, we sensed something special lied ahead, reminiscent of our drawing near the gardens at Giverny.
Perfectly clipped privet hedges foreshadowed our tasting inside the elegant, Margaux-inspired château that is Sonoma's Jordan Winery. A bright sun illuminated the ivy-covered walls of yellow stucco and accentuated red shutters protecting white paned windows.
Our Library Tasting ($20) started in a foyer filled with silver and horn products from the Sandra Jordan collection. We moved up stairways lined with brass banisters to the Library adorned with French antiques and fresh flowers. A bookshelf magically swung open revealing a secret passage to the tasting room, evoking childhood memories of the game of Clue.
Artisan cheeses and estate grown olive oil were served with two Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignons and a Burgundian-style Chardonnay. Since 1976, winemaker Rob Davis has practiced old-world traditions learned at the hand of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff.
CEO, John Jordan, carries on his father Tom's inspiration to replicate the romance of Bordeaux and a European wine country lifestyle, where the estate consumes much of what it produces and shares its bounty with friends and family.
