Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen is a little bit country with a whole lotta white tablecloth sophistication. "Cindy's is a local joint - hip, casual, not fussy," explains owner Cindy Pawlcyn. "The food we serve is from our hearts, what we make at home and what we most like to cook."
Start with hip cocktails or Napa wine at the cool zinc bar. Too early to indulge? Go for the root beer float with creamy, house made vanilla ice cream. In addition to creative salads and sandwiches (how about a Duck Burger?) scrumptious entrées come in large and small plate sizes, and a few hot from the wood burning oven. Many have Asian or Mexican influences.
The Minute 00:60 had a hankering for down-home comfort food. So we started with crisp Forni-Brown greens seasoned with wild honey-vinaigrette, spiced with pecans and blue cheese and framed with sliced pears. Our large plate entrée featured a horseradish and barbeque twist on traditional meatloaf. Mom never made it so good!
Campfire Pie for dessert got a standing ovation. This lighter than air takeoff on a Girl Scout S'more tastes nothing like the gooey sweet of childhood memories. The fluffy marshmallow, fudgy chocolate and crispy crust forced our Taste editor to defend herself from marauding forks.
Cindy Pawlcyn also owns Go Fish and Mustards Grill, both in the Napa Valley. She has authored three cookbooks and scoured the world for recipes, collecting nearly 6,000 culinary books along the way. Last but not least, she is an avid potter.
