A Shakespearian Earth Day
CADE Winery
TRAVEL - April 22, 2009
Would Jack Cade, Shakespeare's leader of a 15th Century rebellion, be pleased with what has been accomplished in his name high atop Howell Mountain in Napa Valley? The Shakespearean inspired PlumpJack Group advanced the 21st Century green revolution at its new CADE Winery. The list of its earth friendly features is long.
CADE Partners dedicated nearly half of its 60 acres to a land trust for open spaces and commissioned Juan Carlos Fernandez of the Lail Design Group to craft a contemporary winery out of steel, glass and concrete. CADE is supposed to find out this summer if they will become the first GOLD-LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified winery in Napa Valley and the only one in California.
Don't be fooled by the winery's wooden-looking panels; they're recycled plastic. Office floors are cork. Solar panels produce electricity, while channel glass (made from recycled glass) maximizes natural light. The steel used is comprised of 98% recycled material and the insulation is recycled blue jeans. Even the gleaming steel table in the naturally cooled caves started life as a furnace.
In the fun-loving spirit of Sir John Falstaff, enjoy CADE's wines with chef Kent Nielsen's seasonally driven small plates utilizing organic, locally grown ingredients. The hospitality building treats visitors to dramatic mountain vistas and sweeping hillsides of low water usage, native grasses, poppies and lupine. Newly planted cork trees will, after 25 years, produce cork for the next 200 years. There are even plans to add outlets in the parking lot to recharge electric cars.
Join the revolution.
