Top Ten Summer Wines

TASTE - June 11, 2009

Picking wine and cheese while scurrying around minutes before a backyard barbeque is a ritual of summer. Today's dizzying array of choices can make the task even more daunting. Smiles crossed our faces when we learned that Whole Foods Market was once again putting its respected reputation behind a helpful selection of interesting, value-priced wines.

The Top Ten Summer Wines program runs through August 4, 2009. Curiously, it features twelve wines. The two extra bonus wines include a "cellar selection" and "seasonal sparkler."

Global wine buyers, Doug Bell and Geof Ryan, selected everyday wines from around the world. At our local store most were priced from $10 to $12 and the Riesling was only $6.99. We spotted familiar names (Chianti) and varietals (Sauvignon Blanc). But what caught our eye, were the lesser-known ones, like V-solo, made 100% from the Verdejo grape. This interesting selection represents a new style of fruity, dry white wine from the Rueda zone, in the Castilla y León region of Spain, historically known for its fortified wines, similar to sherries.

All twelve wines are available in roughly 175 Whole Foods Market stores around the country. A handy in-store flyer lists 5 cheeses and easy-going, summertime foods to pair with the recommended wines.

Whole Foods may just get you to the BBQ on time.
