Wine: 2007, Layer Cake, Malbec ($16)
Subscriber: Jeff W., Manhattan Beach, CA
Why I like it: The first time I had this was at a barbecue and the host kept calling it "berry cake." I really like Malbecs and this one tasted great, had a deep color, and prominent berry flavor with a hint of chocolate, hence the name. Very fun label too.
Wine: 2008, Broadside Chardonnay, Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo, California ($18)
Subscriber: Leslie B., San Francisco, CA
Why I like it: This little gem doesn't "broadside" you with too much oak as California chardonnays often do. It offers a balanced palate of ripe plump tree fruit, a touch of minerality, and a hint of oak, making it a fine companion on a warm summer day. Pair Broadside with a soft cheese appetizer such as burrata, boiled lobster (on the
beach), or guacamole and chips for a delightful combination.
Wine: 2005, Clos du Bois Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast, Geyserville, CA ($14)
Subscriber: Dave G., Chicago, IL
Why I like it: Full of flavor, not harsh and had a smooth finish. The plum and black cherry flavors went well with fajitas and could go well with anything barbequed.
Wine: 2007, Conundrum ($20)
Subscriber: Kelsie M., Seattle, WA
Why I like it: A delicious, well-rounded cuvee style white, intriguing and flirtatious throughout with a satisfying finish. It's perfect for an outdoor reception and complex enough to serve with a meal. Surprisingly, this wine (started by Caymus) remains under the radar and is a great value in one of America's best opportunities for wine - quality whites.
