The Thoughtful Hostess
Sonoma Sparkler
TASTE - April 8, 2009
The soft glow of candles set the mood for dinner. The table was covered in white linen and painted with fresh flowers, antique china, sterling silver, and crystal glasses. Ice buckets chilled a 2003 Iron Horse Blanc de Blancs and a dark green, soft-shouldered bottle unknown to us. Pointing to it, one guest asked: a new sparkling wine? Our friend and hostess smiled as she poured Natural Pear Sonoma Sparkler for those who have chosen life without alcohol.
This delightful drink had the look and feel of sparkling wine. Nationally acclaimed Cider Master, David Cordtz, blends different apple varieties with fruits and berries to create six non-alcoholic sparklers: apple, blood orange, pear, peach, raspberry and lemonade (sans apples).
We found raspberry and pear to be the sweetest varietals. The others were lighter, dryer and more to our taste. Around one in three adult Americans do not drink alcohol, so good hostesses are always looking for suitable alternatives to wine. Sonoma Sparklers allow those guests to partake fully in the romance that wine adds to meals. (Hint: open these in the kitchen, there is no cork and no pop). Even dedicated oenophiles in our households enjoy them.
Sonoma Sparklers are available throughout the United States at outlets found easily through a handy map locater on their web site. The suggested retail price for a 750ml bottle is $4.99 and $2.49 for 10 ounces of bubbles and fun for the designated driver.
