Time for an Oil Change?
Figone's of California Olive Oil Company
December 5, 2008
Put some zoom into your salads, meats, and even desserts, by fueling up with olive oils from Figone's (in person or through the website). The inspiration for this family owned, Sonoma-based company started in the 1920's on the family asparagus farm with the planting of a single sapling brought over from their homestead in Lucca, Italy. Today, led by Frank Figone, the company has expanded its original grove of Mission and Manzanillo varietals to over 4,000 trees on multiple orchards. All milling, blending and bottling are done on site in Glen Ellen. Visitors can observe the pressing process in the fall and enjoy a tasting any time during the year.
The Mission-Manzanillo blend works well with fish and chicken. That extra virgin oil is also offered infused with zest of organic Meyer lemons, Persian limes or blood orange. The lemon and orange blends can be drizzled over cakes and brownies and the lime infusion helps bring seafood salads to life. Tuscan is a blend of seven different varietals and pairs nicely with grilled meats and vegetables.
All varieties can be tasted without charge under their caring guidance and passionate explanation of the art of olive oil making. To get the full benefit of the fragrant aromas and silky textures, the oils should be tasted neat (bread is available but discouraged). A sampling of olive oils can be a welcome respite from a full day or two of wine tasting. Handy little bottles small enough to carry on a plane ride home are available.
