Recently, we grabbed a half-case of the 2006 Havens Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from K&L Wine Merchants, San Francisco's acclaimed wine retailer. This $35 wine went for $9.99 as part of an inventory close out from a good Napa winery caught in the economic maelstrom.
While a deal like that may be unique, we contacted top wine retailers around the country and posed this question:
"Where are you seeing the best wine values today?"
Uniformly, the answer was "everywhere." There's never been a better time in recent memory to stock up, to try new regions and varietals, and to drink better for less.
In Chicago, Doug Jeffirs, Director of Wine Sales at giant Binny's Beverage Depot, said it best: "Many great deals are out there for consumers without even looking too hard. Especially in January and February when many retailers will be promoting inventory clearance sales to move out extra holiday purchases and to make room for incoming Spring selections."
In addition to closeouts, look for values from Spain and Rhone varietals from the south of France.
Even fabled Champagne houses are lowering prices in the face of stiff competition from other sparklers like Cava from Spain and Prosecco from Italy. We're stocking up now on bubblies for the Valentine's Day celebrations, while they last.

Everything people are looking for in top 2007 Rhone reds (ripe, earthy, sappy black fruits, mineral hints, great freshness and intensity), except at a lower price.
Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos 2007 (~$15.99)
Heady, spicy, and a nice step up in complexity for the everyday drinkers from this area (Campo de Borja). A superb value that appeals to both new world and old world wine drinkers.
