Searching for 90+ Rated Wines under $10
Exploring Online

SHOP - March 2, 2010

We've started off each month this year asking retailers, "Where are you seeing the best wine values today?"

This month we're focusing on sensible ways to shop online despite the added costs of shipping. Mike Osborn, founder of Wine.com, tells us, "2010 will continue to be a great year to be a wine consumer, with values at every price."

For us, shopping online is a great way to explore new wines and refine tastes for old favorites. We searched Wine.com intent on finding new 90+ rated wines for under $10.

From Italy, Australia and Spain, came a dozen candidates. They included a few bottles of Shiraz, red and white Italian table wines, some Chardonnays, one Mourvedre and even a couple of Spanish sparklers. By inching up to $12, almost three dozen more appeared from California, France and elsewhere. Note, due to interstate commerce laws, wine prices and availability may vary depending on the state you select for shipment.

Be prepared to act quickly. An under $10 Argentine Malbec (47% discount) we spotted one day was gone the next. Like airline seats, deals go quickly.

When exploring, we use sites with broad, searchable databases to improve the odds we'll like new selections. The best ones make it easy to link independent ratings with prices, provide detailed tasting notes and share consumer comments.
