Matanzas Creek Winery: Lavender Gardens

Matanzas Creek Winery Notable Notes

Early June is the best time to view the glorious lavender fields of Matanzas Creek. Harvest takes place in late June or early July depending on the weather.

Gardeners take note, honeybees love lavender, but deer avoid it.

Lavender, once associated with hankies for doddering dowagers, is transforming. The sachet filler of yesteryear is now a hip herb infused into cosmopolitans, ice creams, chocolates, teas, and more. It adds sensuality to balms, oils, and body butters.

Matanzas Creek Winery, situated in Bennett Valley, Sonoma County, grows over 4500 Provence and Grosso lavender plants. These English hybrids are the workhorses of lavender. Provence, with its sweeter but milder aroma, is grown for culinary use; while the more robust Grosso is used in bath and home products.

Other than select food products and maybe baseball caps, winery branded merchandise often disappoints us. But Matanzas Creek Winery offers a worthy range of lavender lotions and soaps. For Valentine's Day, we suggest nourishing dry, scaling winter skin with the Lavender/Chamomile/Geranium Balm. We find it does wonders for dry hands and cuticles and is suitable for him or her.

For ladies, massaging sumptuous Luxury Body Butter all over after a steamy bath or shower is a marvelously self-indulgent experience without the cost of visiting a spa. The Lavender After Shave Lotion for Men soothes with just the right blend of lavender and warm spicy notes.
