Good Value, Good Cause, Easy to Find Wine
Whole Foods Market Comes Through

SHOP - February 2, 2010

Our ongoing New Year's resolution is to reach out to wine retailers around the country and ask, "Where Are The Best Wine Values Today?" This month we focused on wine that's good quality, a good value (think light on the wallet), and available across the country. The good folks at Whole Foods Market came through with some choice wines available nationwide in their stores that ALSO support good causes. Score!

It's not often we get to "give back" when buying wine but it sure feels good when we do.

From Fairhills Bus Stop...
These wines are products of one of the world's largest Fair Trade projects, a joint venture between exporter, Origin Wine, Mendoza Vineyards in Argentina and Du Toitskloof Winery in South Africa. Over 1,400 farm employees and their families benefit from this unique social development project. Proceeds are dedicated to notable endeavors like purchasing a small bus to transport tourists from the city to the communities.

From Vinum Cellars...
These selections are handmade in small lots by a two-man operation under winemaker Chris Condos and are exclusively labeled for Whole Foods Market stores. Vinum Cellars donates a portion of the profits from the wine to the San Francisco SPCA, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Purple Line

Fairhills Bus Stop Red ($9.99 to $10.99 depending on region)
Full-bodied with aromas of berry fruit and chocolate and hints of plum. It goes great with winter dishes like hearty soups and stews, grilled pork loin and lamb chops or pastas in red sauce.

Fairhills Bus Stop White ($9.99 to $10.99 depending on region)
This one brought home the Silver Medal in the World Wine Championships. A great pick if you're in the mood for something a little on the lighter side. It has a creamy acidity with flavors of apricot and melon. Soak in aromas of lemon grass with a hint of spice. Enjoy it with shellfish, grilled trout and vegetables, poached salmon or chicken dishes.

Vinum Cellars Reserve Petite Sirah ($10.99 to $13.99 depending on region)
Exuberant, ripe, almost jammy pomegranate and blueberry fruit are the primary players here with a juicy finish and mildly chewy tannins. Because of its big body and lush fruit, the list of foods that this wine could readily handle is huge. Pizza, beef stew, garlic roast potatoes, southern Indian food, most Mexican dishes, even burgers with ketchup or barbeque sauce.

Vinum Cellars Chenin Blanc Viognier ($10.99 to $13.99 depending on region)
This medley of pear, melon and grapefruit delivers a supple texture and snappy finish. It's a great pick for brunch or dinner and really shines when paired with thin-crust pizzettas made with a smooth, mild chèvre like Cana de Cabra.
