Modern miracles abound, as CNN Heroes aptly demonstrated this Thanksgiving with full Hollywood hoopla. We interviewed Doc Hendley before his national TV appearance as one of 10 finalists, selected from over 9,000 nominations entered from over 100 countries.
For Doc, the simple phrase "wine to water" was an epiphany, a biblical call for a regular guy to change the world. Doc's ensuing research into the scourge of unsafe drinking water kindled a passion in this wanderer turned student bartender. Like all great journeys, his began with a small step, hosting a "wine to water" fund raising event for his regular customers.
Doc's search for the best way to distribute the donations from these events led him to where needs were greatest, Darfur. With bullets whizzing overhead, he learned first hand how people survive with nothing but unsafe drinking water and how water kills.
Doc's own charity, Wine to Water, has helped over 25,000 people in Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, India and Cambodia. The goal is to help 1 million. With Gnekow Family Winery they also produce a Wine to Water Chardonnay and Old Vine Zinfandel. One dollar from the sale of each bottle is donated to his organization. Every drop in the bucket counts.
