The Oxford Companion to Wine, 3rd Edition

(Oxford University Press)
DISCOVER - June 24, 2009

Many home cooks would not be without the Joy of Cooking, or restaurateur without The Food Lover's Companion. But what about folks who just enjoy wine? Which reference book should they have? Try The Oxford Companion to Wine.

Kindle notwithstanding, there's something special about holding a hefty tome of authoritative knowledge in your hands, turning dog-eared pages, finding answers, and experiencing a "so that's what that means" moment. This one volume encyclopedia of wine is organized in a dictionary format with ample charts, maps, appendices, and user-friendly cross references to related topics.

For us, knowing more about a wine we're drinking magnifies its enjoyment. We'll look up a grape variety, winery or region in question, particularly when a guest brings a bottle, noting its story and sharing details. Guests appreciate the effort.

Author and wine maven Jancis Robinson editing her third edition, made the best work better. Now is a good time to add it to your wine library (or start one), given the currently discounted prices we found at amazon.com.

Don't be perplexed; next time be the one to catch a wine snob mispronouncing "meritage" or start a discussion about Canadian Icewine.
