If you liked the cinematography in Sideways, you'll love Rob DaFoe's, From Ground to Glass. Set in California's central coast wine country, this documentary depicts DaFoe's quest to make two barrels of Shiraz, just for the joy of it.

But it's more than 73 minutes of DaFoe voicing over shots of dramatic sunsets, foggy valleys, plump grape clusters and autumn colored vines. He captures wine's mystery, romance, passion and devotion through well-edited interviews with more than 20 winemakers, including luminaries such as Paul Draper and Warren Winiarski.

DaFoe's self-deprecating humor overcomes the sometimes conventional vocabulary in his own narration of the story. He shines as an interviewer. How winemakers love what they do and how deeply they embrace its all encompassing lifestyle comes through powerfully from their lips. As Wolfgang Hallauer comments, "Drinking wine is really to me a refinement of culture. An experience which you can share, and it gives the opportunity to be connected to the earth, which is what ultimately most people are happiest with."

DaFoe has talked with Netflix but as of now this DVD is not widely distributed. It will set you back $28 with shipping. Enjoy on your flat screen with a few friends and some wine; it's cheaper than four tickets at the theater.
