Wine enthusiast Maynard James Keenan, lead singer for rock-band Tool, is headlining an unexpected winegrowing hotspot: Arizona.
Blood Into Wine is the newest wine-genre'd documentary depicting Keenan's journey into wine making and self-discovery. The film features Keenan's winery Caduceus Cellars and Arizona Stronghold Vineyards located in Jerome, Arizona. Keenan's joined by his wine mentor Eric Glomski, former David Bruce winemaker in California and current owner of award-winning Page Springs Cellars. Together, the two embrace the climate and conditions of the Grand Canyon State to help forge a new frontier of wine.
Set against a backdrop of rich cinematography, they tell a humorous, introspective story blended with technical winemaking information. If you're a Tool fan, you'll appreciate the glimpse into Keenan's deadpanned sense of self and his artist's approach to music and wine. If your iPod is devoid of Tool, no fear. A celebrated cast of cameos by comedians and actors provide narration and comic relief and renowned wine-types such as Wine Spectator's James Suckling weigh in on Keenan's wine and the region's virility.
The film begins by philosophically questioning "Why do people like to drink wine?" Keenan's "hippie answer" hypothesizes about a grape's complex DNA strand calling it a supreme being. He goes on to further deduce its importance in the grand formula to "get those panties off" on prom night. Seems as though Keenan's tastes in wine have come a long way since prom night.
See for yourself!
